A student, Fatawu Razak, 20, was yesterday lynched to death by some residents of Yikene, a suburb of Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region for allegedly stealing GH?1,000.00 from a shop.

When the GNA got to the scene a few minutes after the incident, the suspect had been beaten to pulp and was bleeding from his nose and mouth whilst breathing uncontrollably as a blue rope which was believed to have been used to tie him around a tree nearby.

It took the intervention of passers-by and travelers on the main Bolga-Navrongo road to swiftly call the police while some other residence watched on.

Anapogbila Nyaaba, Operator of “Peace and Love Spot” whose money was allegedly stolen, told the GNA that the suspect came to buy a sachet of water and just when he was leaving the shop, she realized that her money had been stolen.

The gentleman immediately bolted as the lady yelled for help. An angry mob chased the suspect and accosted him and subsequently subjected him to serious beating.

The police arrived at the scene at about 0158hrs and quickly rushed the victim to the Bolgatanga regional hospital where he was pronounced dead two hours after. It is however unclear if the suspect was attended to as Doctors are still embarking on a strike action.

When Police officials visited the crime scene the next day, a group of men had raided the area and vandalized four houses including the shop where the act took place.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Godson Netsyo who confirmed the death in an interview indicated that residents had deserted the area and investigations into the incident had commenced, saying that “The perpetrators, when found culpable would face the full rigors of the law”.
