Sekondi (W/R), Dec. 20, GNA - A Sekondi District Magistrate's Court on Monday sentenced Justice Anim, a 53-year old machine operator at Kwesimintsim, near Takoradi, to 24 months' imprisonment in hard labour for stealing.
The Court ordered the accused to pay 1,550,000 cedis for ladies clothes he stole from one Elizabeth Opoku, the complainant. The accused pleaded not guilty.
Prosecuting, Police Sergeant Adu Kyeremeh, said at about 1430 hours on November 16, this year, Elizabeth, who is a trader at Kwesimintsim, displayed women's clothes valued at about two million cedis in front of her house.
The items included brassieres, ladies pants, blouse and canvass shoes.
Sergeant Kyeremeh said after arranging the goods for sale, Elizabeth went inside the house to fetch something but when she returned, she could not find any of the items she had displayed for sale.
He said Elizabeth rushed to Takoradi to inform a friend who had a shoe shop about the theft of her wares, but when she got there, she met Kyeremeh offering 11 pairs of canvass shoes for sale to the friend. Sergeant Kyeremeh said the Elizabeth identified the shoes and caused the accused to be arrested.
During interrogation by the Police, the accused said a friend gave him the shoes to sell. The police could not retrieve the rest of the items.
