68 Drivers convicted for using fake documents

About 68 drivers among 99 arrested for allegedly using fake road worthiness certificates have been convicted by an Accra motor court.

The drivers were fined various sums of money totaling GH¢47,000 for not using the right procedures in acquiring the document from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Anderson Ofosu Ackaah, revealed this to DAILY GUIDE at the Central Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

According to him, drivers whose certificates are fake are those who employ the services of middle men in acquiring them instead of driving to the DVLA offices with their vehicles for proper checks prior to the issuance of the certificate.

“Any driver who wants to change the road worthiness certificate must take the vehicle to the offices of DVLA and not to leave the vehicle at home and go there for the licence.”

He noted that most drivers are ignorant and do not know the difference between the original document and the fake one.

“The new road worthiness certificate called the ‘E Road Certificate,’ cannot be determined with the ordinary eyes unless with the two-way dimensional device,” ACP Ackaah pointed out.

He warned those police officers using their mobile phones as a replacement for the two-way dimensional device to detect those using the fake road worthiness certificate to desist from that.

The divisional commander in-charge of the Odorkor MTTD, DSP Abdulai Mumuni, urged personnel of the Department to stop being aggressive on drivers.

He said some of the offences committed by drivers are sometimes minor and so police personnel must sometimes warn those drivers involved and let them go instead of arresting them.

“Also try and accept drivers’ tolerance level because the moment you tell them that they are under arrest, their mood changes,” he admonished.
