A self-styled canoe carver was on Monday remanded into police custody by a Cape Coast Circuit Court for allegedly defrauding the Chief Fisherman of Ankaful, a fishing community near Saltpond of GH¢ 10,000.00 under the pretext of curving a canoe for him.

The plea of Kweku Frimpong aka Abebe, 61, was not taken and would re-appear on February 23, for the commencement of the hearing of the case.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Okyere Andam, who prosecuted, told the court presided over by Mr. Kofi Seshie Ametewee that the complainant, Mr. Kofi Sam, is the Chief Fisherman of Ankaful, a fishing community near Saltpond.

Frimpong is a farmer and a self-styled canoe carver at Akokwaso in the Eastern Region.

He said nine months ago, Frimpong contacted Mr. Sam that he had curved three canoes at Ofoase and offering them for sale to which the chief fisherman agreed to buy.

ASP Andam further told the Court that Mr. Sam went with Frimpong to Ofoase to inspect the canoes and subsequently paid ten thousand Ghana Cedis to him, but instead sold them to another person for GH¢ 23,000.00 and went into hiding.

He said Frimpong was on February 5 arrested by the Saltpond Police at a hideout at Akokwaso in the Eastern Region following a complaint it received from Mr. Sam.

He said upon interrogation, Frimpong admitted collecting the said amount from Mr. Sam and the sale of the canoe to another person.
