Attempt to hijack ballot box failed - ACP Tabi

Mr Kojo Antwi Tabi, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in charge of the Dansoman Divisional Police Command, has expressed surprise at the attempted hijacking of a ballot box by some suspected land guards.

He said this whiles briefing Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) who was on his normal rounds as chairman of the Metropolitan Security Council (MESEC) to acquaint himself with the conduct of the District Assembly elections.

ACP Tabi described the incident, which occurred at Korle Gonno, as unfortunate, as the suspected land guards sought to hijack the boxes of the polls.

He said the police received information that fighting was going on at one of the polling stations- Hampstead School polling station, due to an attempt by some people to hijack the ballot boxes.

ACP Tabi said the police patrol team were called in and with the help of some residents the suspects were arrested.

He thanked the people for their vigilance and helping the police apprehend the suspects who are now in custody whiles investigation continues.

Dr Vanderpuije commended the police patrol team for their swift response and foiling the hijacking attempt, adding that, there was the need to observe laid down rules and procedures in resolving electoral issues.

He later signed a book of condolence for Samuel Nuamah, the Ghanaian Times Presidential Press Corp, who was killed in an accident and donated 20 cartons of beer, 50 boxes mineral water and an undisclosed amount of money to the bereaved family.

The Mayor later visited Mr Patrick Bidda of the Enquirer newspaper, Mr Eduward Kwabi of TV3 and Mr William Djentu of Peace FM, who were also on admission at the 37 Military Hospital to wish them a speedy recovery.
