Nine individuals have been arrested over examination malpractices in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The arrests occurred in various locations, including Bekwai in the Ashanti Region and Tema in the Greater Accra Region. Seven of the arrested are teachers, as reported by RainbowRadioOnline.com.
John Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examination Council (WAEC), confirmed the arrests in an interview. He stated that the council is collaborating with relevant stakeholders to enhance security measures. The seven teachers will be reported to the Ghana Education Service for disciplinary action to be taken against them.
"We also arrested one person at Nkoranza Senior High School, one at Chemu Senior High School in Tema, and two in the Bono region. Additionally, there were two others, whom I will refer to as outsiders. They were not directly related to the examination but were attempting to gain access to the candidates. In total, seven teachers and two outsiders were arrested," he said.
"We have deployed additional monitors to those flashpoints and have also appealed to our partners in the security agencies to ensure their presence is felt in those areas. This is to prevent people from continuing with such malpractices."
"When we apprehend teachers in such situations, we forward their names to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, as they are not our employees. The Director-General will then be in a position to instruct the Teachers Council to take disciplinary action against them," Kapi explained.
