Baby dumped in toilet pit

Tue, 2 Jul 2013 Source: Daily Guide

Police at Walewale in the West Mamprusi District of the Northern Region are on the hunt for a mother of a three-day-old baby boy after she dumped him in a pit latrine at the St Paul’s Catholic Church.

The incident is believed to have happened at night in order not to attract public attention to the act, which has been described as barbaric.

The baby, who has since been rescued and is recuperating at the Nelson Mandela Clinic, may be handed over to the Department of Social Welfare, while police continue investigations into the matter.

According to one Atanga Atia, the rescuer, he was on his way to town when he decided to pass urine close to the public toilet.

On stopping, he heard some strange noise coming from the pit of the toilet and thought it might be a stray goat that might have fallen into it.

He stood still and on thorough examination realized that a baby wrapped in some polythene bags had been dumped into the pit.

He immediately sought the assistance of one Felix Atuwura to remove the maggot wrapped baby from the decked pit. It was rushed to the Mandela Clinic while an official complaint was lodged with the police.

Residents of Kukuazugu vowed to unmask the wicked mother and hand her over to the police.

This is the second time in less than a year that an incident like this has occurred in the Walewale township after a baby was found dead in a pit at the Nayiri Fong public toilet.
