An Accra Circuit court on Monday handed a 20-year jail term to one Amidu Yakubu, a barber, for conspiracy to commit crime and robbery.
Amidu was said to have conspired with one Kojo, now at large, and robbed one one Badu Yaw Joseph of his wallet containing a driver’s license, Voter’s ID card, a G-Seven mobile phone worth GH¢ 300.00 and an amount of GH¢ 180.00.
He pleaded guilty to both charges and is to serve 15 years for conspiracy and 20 years for robbery both to run concurrently.
The prosecution told the court that the complainant, Badu, is a taxi driver while the convict is a barber and they both reside at Sowutuom Omanjor, a suburb of Accra.
He said on December 26, 2014, at about 0130, while the complainant was working with his taxi at night, the convict together with his accomplice, now at large, bordered the taxi from Sowutuom Mambo to Omanjor.
On reaching a section of the road at Omanjor Roman Park, Amidu, sitting on the front passenger seat, pulled a knife at the complainant and ordered him to surrender everything on him.
According to the prosecution, the complainant, sensing danger, quickly obliged and gave Amidu his G-Seven mobile phone, the wallet and an the GH¢ 180.00.
Both Amidu and his accomplice, after succeeding in their evil act, took to their heels. On January 2, the complainant went to a drinking spot within the Omanjor vicinity and spotted his mobile phone with the sales girl, one Debora Asiedu.
The complainant made a report to the police which led to the arrest of the sales girl. In her caution statement she mentioned Amidu as the source. Amidu was arrested and in his caution statement he admitted the offence.
The prosecution told the court that a search was conducted in the convict’s room and the complainant’s mobile phone, together with his wallet, were retrieved.
