Suhum (ER), May 26, GNA - Five people, including an 80 year-old man and a pregnant woman, had all their personal effects and cash running into thousands of Ghana Cedis destroyed, when a three year old boy set their house on fire at Suhum last Wednesday. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency GNA), the caretaker of the house, Mr Joseph Larbi Lartey said the victims, Lydia Akyema, Victoria Akwaley, Yao Adu, Gifty Niko, the pregnant woman and 80 year old Opanyin Kwame Ntow, lost all their personal belongings including television sets, radio sets, video cameras, mobile phones, sewing machines, refrigerators, fans, furniture, jewelleries, gas cookers and cash. According to Mr Larbi, the victims most of whom are traders often leave the house early, leaving behind their children. He said on the day of the incident one of the victims, Lydia Akyema, left for town, leaving behind her grandson who was playing with other children in the house.

He said on her return, Akyema detected fire in her room and rushing there, she saw her grandson coming out with matches in his hand. She therefore raised an alarm but before people nearby could help fight the fire; it had spread to other rooms. He said before personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service arrived at the scene, the fire had destroyed the whole house. Meanwhile the victims have appealed to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the District Assembly and other benevolent societies to come to their aid since they are putting up with friends and relatives. 26 May 09
