Accra, May 19, GNA - A businessman who allegedly issued four dud cheques on different dates to pay for GH¢296,000 loan on Tuesday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court. Kodjo Bekoe, who is facing four counts of issuing dud cheques, pleaded not guilty. The court presided over by Mrs Ivy Heward-Mills admitted him to GH¢300,000 bail with a surety and would re-appear on May 26. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr George Abavelim, prosecuting said towards the end of 2007, Bekoe approached Madam Darling Tuffour, a businesswoman, for financial assistance to enable him clear his goods at the port. On December 1, 2007, Madam Tuffour gave Bekoe an amount of GH¢296,000 as a loan. ASP Abavelim said Bekoe issued post-dated cheques to the complainant for payment of the loan. The prosecution said when the cheques were presented at various banks they were dishonoured on the grounds that there were insufficient funds in the accused person's accounts. Madam Tuffour therefore notified Bekoe but he made no effort to sort out things with the complainant and after several futile attempts to retrieve her money reported the matter to the police and Bekoe was arrested. 19 May 09

Bolgatanga, May 19, GNA - The World Union of Catholic Women Organization (WUCWO) Day has been marked by Women's organizations in the Catholic Church at the Sacred Heart Cathedral Church Parish in Bolgatanga. The Upper East Deputy Regional Minister and Diocesan Laity Council Chairman, Mrs Lucy Awuni said the celebration of WUCWU Day was to deepen the Catholic faith and enhance the socio-economic development of its members worldwide. She said the theme for the celebration; "The significance of Women's Day," set aside by the United Nations (UN) was to project the achievements of women without regards to national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political divide. Mrs Awuni said marking the day in Ghana brought to the fore the contributions of women to national development and the need for men and women to unite to end violence against women. She said the government had demonstrated its commitment to the appointment of women as ministers of state and district chief executives and urged the women to assert themselves to contribute to the political and socio-economic advancement of the country. She called on the National Council for Catholic Women to ensure the holistic development of Ghanaian women and help to achieve the universal primary education for children of school going
