A young lady in her middle twenties has accused the Chief Executive Officer of a private building and construction firm located near East Legon in Accra of sexual harassment.
According to the young lady who has decided to remain anonymous, she was employed at the company as Sales Executive and has always reported to duty early and carried herself according to what was expected of her.
She alleged that two months into her job, the Chief Executive Officer started making sexual advances on her but she took it as “one of those things”. She said “this man will call me in the middle of the night and tell me he loves me and asked that we should be in a relationship. He said he will want to have a child with me and buy me a house. Sometimes he will ask me to make love to him but on countless occasions, I turned him down. It is even sad when the other females in the company are snitching and backstabbing you there, because they have accepted it as it is corporate politics. It is really sad that the female is usually a victim in these cases”.
She said two months ago, her boss started threatening her and when he realized she was not giving in to his demands, he dismissed her stating she didn’t fit into the mission and vision of the company. The other reason given for her dismissal according to the lady is that, she was accused of not answering or returning the C.E.O’s calls.
When asked whether she reported the case to the Ghana Labour Commission since the issue lies within their jurisdiction, she answered in the affirmative adding that “the commission only asked me to provide details which I did”. On whether she reported the matter to her parents, she said she told her uncle who advised that the matter be handled on account of discrimination and administrative injustice and not on the basis of sexual harassment.
