Careless driver fined for causing death

Tema, Aug. 08, GNA - The Tema Circuit Court 'A' has imposed a fine of three million cedis on a driver whose careless driving caused the death of a motor rider standing by the side of a road. Siaw Daniel pleaded guilty and will go to prison for three years if he failed to pay the fine.

Prosecuting, DSP Robert Aganiba told the court presided over by Mr Charles Asiedu that on October 7, 2003, at about 1130 hours, the accused was driving a Daihatsu taxi with registration number GT 377 E, from Ashaiman Middle East through a side road to link the Ashaiman main road. He said the accused, who failed to observe traffic, entered the main road and suddenly saw a tipper truck on his way and in trying to avoid a collision, swerved onto a pavement, where he knocked down Amidu Mohammed aged 39 years who was standing by his motorbike that had developed a mechanical fault.

DSP Aganiba said Mohammed was seriously injured and was rushed do to the Tema General Hospital and immediately transferred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where he died the following day, while on admission.
