A Tarkwa circuit court has fined a 25 year-old carpenter, Stephen Abekah GH¢120.00 for stealing 23 pieces of floor tiles valued GH¢37.00 from Goldfields Ghana Limited (GGL), Tarkwa Mine.
The accused, who was convicted on his own plea, in default would serve six months imprisonment.
Prosecuting Police Detective Chief Inspector Oscar Amponsah told the court presided over by Mr. Samuel Obeng Diawuo that the complainants are security guards of GGL, Tarkwa Mine and the accused is an employee working with Whilham Construction firm, a subcontractor attached to GGL, Tarkwa Mine.
He said on April 9, at about 1745 hours, the complainants were on duty at the Apinto gate within the company’s premises and spotted the accused putting a bag into a taxicab.
Detective Amponsah said the complainants suspecting the bag contained stolen items, approached the accused and questioned.
According to the Prosecutor, when the bag was search they found twenty three pieces of floor tiles.
He said the accused further led the complainants to a nearby bush where he had kept additional sack containing broken tiles.
Detective Amponsah said the accused was arrested and handed over to the Police.
The Prosecutor said the accused in his caution statement at the initial stage explained that it was his supervisor Adolf Awortwe, who permitted him to take the broken tiles, but when the Police conducted their investigation it was found to be false.
