Yaw Boakye, a 23-year-old chainsaw operator, has been sentenced to 18 years imprisonment by a Sunyani circuit court, for defiling an eight-year-old class one pupil of Chiraa Presbyterian Primary School.

The presiding judge, Mr Ekow Mensah, passed the sentence after the accused pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement.

The fact of the case presented by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mawunyo Nanegbe were that on October 9, 2012 at about 8 p.m., one Margaret Kumi together with the victim went and sat under a tree near Yaw Boakye’s house.

He said whilst sitting there, the accused person approached the victim and Margaret and demanded from the victim if she had ever had sexual intercourse to which the victim replied in the negative.

ASP Nanegbe said the victim later asked Margaret to go and see her off but she instead asked Yaw Boakye to accompany the victim.

He said after walking some distance, the accused person went behind a building with the victim, undressed himself as well as the victim, made her sit on his lap and had sexual intercourse with her.

ASP Nanegbe said while in the act, a witness in the case appeared at the scene and in the process of confronting Yaw Boakye, a fight ensued between them which attracted people to the scene and the accused, realizing that a crowd had gathered, fled the scene.

He said a complaint was lodged at the police station y the victim’s mother on October 10, 2012 but the accused could not be traced till February 4, 2013 when the police arrested him.

ASP Nanegbe said after an investigation, the accused person was charged with the offence.
