Cheated robber causes arrest of accomplices

Three persons who allegedly robbed a Chinese of his bag containing GH¢1,000 and a Non-Citizen National Identity Card have been put before an Accra Circuit Court.

Mohammed Iddris, a trader; Jacob Nii Ayittey Thompson, an Electric Welder and Ekow Annan, a drinking bar operator who are facing conspiracy and robbery charges, pleaded not guilty.

Annan who allegedly felt cheated is said to have caused the arrest of his accomplices when he received only GH¢100 as his share of the booty.

The court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh remanded all the three accused persons into Police custody to reappear on December 11.

Prosecuting Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mawuenyo Nanegbe said the complainant, Shang Ya Wei resides at the 37 Military Hospital area in Accra.

DSP Nanegbe said Iddris is a Nigerian residing at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Thompson lives in Accra and Annan plies his trade at Adabraka.

On November 18, this year, at about 10:30pm the complainant and his brother Zhu Jun Sha hired the services of a taxi driver in their area to take them to a place they could have fun.

Prosecution said the taxi driver took them to Cumberland Hotel at Adabraka. While they were having fun with some ladies, the Prosecution said the taxi driver approached Iddris that he brought some Chinese to the Cumberland Hotel and that he suspects them of carrying monies in their bags.

The prosecutor said the taxi driver convinced Iddris to get some other men to snatch the bag of them.

Iddris discussed it with Thompson who also introduced Annan.

DSP Nanegbe said after having fun, the taxi took the complainant and his friend to their residence.

However, DSP Nanegbe said on their way, the taxi driver pretended that his engine had developed a fault at a spot where Iddris and Thompson waiting. Thompson punched the face of the complainant and took his bag.

On November 20, this year, the accused persons were arrested following a tip off. During interrogation, they admitted committing the offence

According to the prosecutor, Annan has since refunded GH¢100 which was his share of booty.
