Former Black Stars Defender John Paintsil is to be arraigned before court today Thursday, May 26, for assaulting a police commander.
His wife had reported him to the police on Tuesday, May 24 for allegedly stealing her car.
The footballer was invited to the East Legon police station where he punched DSP Basintale during interrogation.
PRO of the Accra regional Police Command, ASP Afia Tenge, speaking to Class News, said “because the District Commander has now become a party, that is a victim in this case, the Regional Commander has directed that they no longer handle the issue, so, it has now been given to the District Crime Officer to continue with the investigation”.
Afia Tenge said Painstil will be charged with “stealing, causing harm, assault and offensive conduct on a police officer”.
This is not the first time the footballer has had a brush with the law.
On 22 February 2013, Paintsil was held in police custody for assaulting his wife and beating a neighbour, who tried to save the situation.
Paintsil was part of the Black Stars team that played in the FIFA World Cup in 2006 and 2010
