Corn miller jailed 15 years for attempted murder

A corn miller arrested for attempting to murder his girlfriend has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in hard labor by a Kumasi Circuit Court.

Joseph Koranteng Oddei, 22, was additionally ordered to pay compensation of GHC10,000.00 to the victim.

The court, presided over by Mrs. Lydia Osei Marfo, gave the punishment after he pleaded guilty to the offence.

Police Inspector Eric Asare said the incident happened on October 22, at about 1745 hours, at Bomso in Kumasi.

The convict and Grace Anambono had been sexually-involved but the relationship got strained.

On the said day, the lady together with the sister visited a friend at Bomso and were returning to Besease, where they reside when they met Oddei.

He called the victim aside, told her that his grandmother wanted see her and she obliged.

Suddenly, the convict pulled out a machete and threatened to hack her to death.

Scared for her life, she took to her heels. He run after her, caught up with her and inflicted multiple wounds on her – head, neck, back and right hand, until she fell to the ground.

Oddei took her for dead, dropped the machete and attempted to flee but was hotly pursued by some neighbors.

He managed to take refuge at a nearby local FM Radio station and the police were called in to take him away.

The victim was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) where she was kept on admission for days.
