Offinso (Ash.) Nov. 24 GNA----Kwame Antwi, a 27-year old farmer at Nkubease near Afrancho was on Wednesday sentenced to a fine of 1.5 million cedis by an Offinso Circuit Court for defacing two posters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
He would, in default serve a jail term of six months. Antwi, who pleaded guilty to the charge of defacement of notices, was also bonded for six months to be of good conduct.
Police Chief Inspector W.K. Salia told the court, presided over by Mr. A.A. Abanga, that the accused on October 12 this year, at about 0700 hours, went to complain to an NDC activist at Nkubease about the destruction of some NPP posters he himself had posted at some vantage points in the community, the previous day.
Suspecting the criminal act was committed by NDC followers, Antwi threatened to pay them back.
Chief Inspector Salia said the accused, who would not accept any explanation that the NDC could not be held responsible since there was no proof, pulled a blade from his pocket and cut two posters of the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Offinso North, Mr Kwadwo Appiah-Kubi.
Mr Abanga when passing sentence said Ghanaians wanted peaceful elections and deliberate acts such as that committed by Antwi should be condemned.
He said though a first offender, the court decided to impose a heavy fine on him to serve as a deterrent.
