Kumawu, (Ash), Dec. 24, GNA - The Kumawu circuit court has fined a 20-year-old unemployed woman 500,000 cedis for assaulting a trader at Seniagya in the Sekyere East District of Ashanti. The culprit Adwoa Twumwaa, who pleaded guilty to the charge, will serve a six-month prison term in default.

The court also ordered the accused to pay 500,000 cedis compensation to Madam Adwoa Durowaa, the complainant. Police Inspector Gabriel Dzitonu told the court presided over by Mr Frank Owusu Afriyie that on December 12, this year, the accused credited a tuber of yam valued at 2000 cedis from Burowaa and promised to pay the same day but failed to do so.

He said the next day when the complainant saw the accused on the street and demanded her money, the accused said she had no money and that she was not the only debtor in the country. The prosecution said at about 2000hrs on December 14, the accused went and told the complainant's husband that she would teach his wife a lesson for being insolent towards her.

Inspector Dzitonu said the following day the accused went to the stall of Durowaa and hit her forehead with a stone. She then reported the case to the police and was given a medical report form to the hospital.

He said when the complainant was returning from the hospital, the accused attempted to assault her again, but a policeman intervened, and when the policeman attempted to arrest the accused, she resisted. She was however, overpowered and sent to the police station and charged with the offence.
