A cashier of Samartex Co-operative Credit Union in Samreboi, in the Western region has been granted bail in the sum of 260,000 Ghana cedis for allegedly stealing 251,199.85 Ghana cedis belonging to the union.
Henry Ansah pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing and will re-appear on July 15. Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Oscar Amponsah told the court presided by Mr. Justice Samuel Obeng Diawuo that on April 4 management of the union detected that the accused had stolen 6,000 Ghana cedis by issuing false receipts to customers who paid monies to him.
He said this prompted management of the union to audit the accused and it revealed that between January and March the accused stole 251,199.85 Ghana cedis from his employers.
When the accused was arrested and questioned about the crime, he confessed to the Police that he stole the receipts books from the office and burned down the duplicates and triplicates of those false receipts he issued out to their customers.
