A Circuit Court at Fiapre in the Sunyani West District of Brong-Ahafo Region on Tuesday granted bail to two police constables arrested while escorting 390 bags of stolen cocoa fertilizers from Sankore to Kumasi.
The fertilizer has a total market value of GH? 50,000.00.
Superintendent of Police Alhaji Maama Arhin, Regional Crime Officer told the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday in Sunyani that the two officers are still in Police custody because they could not meet the bail conditions of a sum of GH? 8,000.00 each with two sureties to justify.
Supt Arhin said the personnel who are Constable Osei Tutu, 21 and Constable Kyei Amoah , 27, both stationed at Suame Divisional Visibility Unit in Kumasi are also to report weekly to him before the Court’s next adjournment date of July 28.
He stated that the suspects were charged with abetment of crime and stealing whilst their civilian driver Yaw Boahen, 27 who is on Police enquiry bail would be used as witness in the case during trials.
Supt Arhin said his outfit is writing an administrative report to the Ashanti Regional Police Command where the constables are stationed for an internal disciplinary action to be taking against them.
The police on Sunday, July 19, at about 2200 hours intercepted a cargo truck with registration number GT-7050, loaded with 390 bags of cocoa fertilizer at the Akyerensua Police check point in the Asutifi South District heading towards Kumasi.
Supt Arhin said police investigations revealed that the consignment was allocated for cocoa farmers at Sankore in the Asonafo South District.
The Police investigations also revealed that the main perpetrator behind the crime was one Job of Job and sons Agro Chemicals at Sankore who is now at large.
