Kumasi, Sept 16, GNA - A Kumasi Circuit Court has sentenced a 54-year-old watchman to three years imprisonment for the death of his 25-year-old girlfriend through criminal abortion. Clement Abugri Gumah pleaded not guilty to the offence but was found culpable.

He confessed procuring an unknown drug to terminate the three-month pregnancy but insisted that he did so because of the persistence of the deceased, Mari Bukari. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Doris Amewu told the court presided over by Justice D.W.P Amedior that the convict and the deceased ha= d been in a relationship for four years.

The lady got pregnant and was given some unknown tablets to swallow and insert some in her private part to abort the foetus. The prosecution said the medication proved ineffective and bent on getting rid of the pregnancy, Gumah prepared a concoction for the deceased to drink. ASP Amewu said when Mari drank the mixture she started vomiting blood and collapsed. She was rushed to the Suntreso Government Hospital where she was referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. A report was made to the police, leading to Gumah's arrest. The prosecution said a post mortem conducted on the body showed that he= r death was the result of an illegal abortion.
