Court remands car dealer for robbery

An Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday remanded one Ben Ninson, a car dealer into police custody for conspiracy to commit crime and robbery.

Ben was said to have conspired with one Kwame now at large and robbed one Aaron Mantey of his Toyota taxi, one mobile phone and an amount of GH? 120.00.

He pleaded not guilty and is to reappear before the court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri on September 12.

Prosecuting Chief Superintendent of Police Duuti Tuaruka told the court that the complainant is a taxi driver residing at Abeka in Accra, while the accused person is a car dealer residing at Assin Fosu.

He said on August 23, at about 0130 hours, the complainant was in charge of a Toyota Corolla taxi plying around Kwame Nkrumah Circle when he was hired by the accused person and one other man on the run to take them to Opeibea house near Airport residential area.

He said the complainant took the men into the car and on reaching a place near Alliance Francaise School, the accused and his accomplice asked the complainant to stop for them to alight.

The prosecution told the court that, when the complainant stopped, the accused person and his accomplice pulled a knife and snatched the taxi, his money and mobile phone.

He said the complainant reported the case to the police.

Chief Superintendent of Police Tuaruka said fortunately the car owner had installed a tracking device in the car which enabled the police track the car at Assin Fosu.

He told the court that on August 24, when the police arrived at Assin Fosu, the said car was found parked at the fitting shop with all the number plates removed.

The prosecution said when the accused person who was around the fitting shop saw the police, he fled into a nearby bush, but the police pursued and managed to arrest him.

Meanwhile investigations are ongoing to arrest his accomplice.
