A private legal practitioner, Chris Ackumey has lauded the punishment given to the 13 members of the vigilante group, Delta force for escaping from police custody.

“I accept the judgment of the judge. I can’t question it,” he said Wednesday commenting on the development on Morning Starr.

A Kumasi Circuit Court Tuesday fined the 13 Delta Force members an amount of GHc 2,400 for escaping lawful custody.

Additionally, they have been made to sign a bond of good behavior for six months failure for which will attract a 3-year jail term.

That notwithstanding, they have also been remanded for two weeks to reappear in court on April 30, 2017.

There was massive public uproar since the punishment of the 13 was announced—with many including the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa describing it as mild.

According to him, the judge should have given the 13 a harsher sentence to serve as deterrent.

“If you look at what Delta Force and what their accomplices did, it has never happened. I believe like most Ghanaians do, the verdict is lenient,” he said in an interview on Asempa FM Tuesday and that “clearly this is clearly a slap on the wrist.”

Mr. Ackumey, however, believes otherwise arguing that the judge has the leeway to determine the fine imposed on the Delta force 13.
