Driver granted bail for destroying property

Cape Coast Feb. 24. GNA- A circuit court at Cape Coast, presided over by Mr Beresford Acquah, on Thursday granted Kofi Ofori, a driver, six million cedis bail with a surety to be justified for allegedly destroying the property of one Madam Faustina Dennis, a trader at Saltpond.

Ofori, who was allegedly on the run for three years, pleaded not guilty would reappear on Thursday March 3.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Augustine Amonoo told the court that the accused and Madam Dennis live in the same vicinity at Saltpond, and that about 1800 Hrs on March 25 2002, Madam Dennis was returning from town, when her son one Nana Kwaw run to inform her that Ofori and one Kofi Sampson, were destroying her kiosk.

He said Madam Dennis rushed to the scene and saw the two men, pulling down the kiosk, which was worth 600,000 cedis at the time, and she reported the matter to the police who managed to arrest Sampson but Ofori bolted.

He said Ofori who later surfaced in the town, was arrested and granted bail, with an order to report to the police later, but he failed to do so, until the person who stood surety for him, spotted him at a funeral in the town last Monday, and caused his arrest. Meanwhile, his alleged accomplice, Sampson, has already been tried by another court and is awaiting judgement on his case.
