Kumasi, May 19, GNA - A Kumasi circuit court has sentenced an 18-year-old driver's mate to seven years' imprisonment in hard labour for defiling an eight year-old girl.

Sheriff Mahama was convicted on his own plea.

Chief Inspector Joseph Odjidja, prosecuting, told the court, presided over by Mr Essel Mensah, that both the accused and the victim lived in the same vicinity at Sepe Buokrom, a suburb of Kumasi. He said on May 13 this year, at about 0300 hours while the victim and her mother were asleep on a rooftop where the tenants normally relax during warm nights, Mahama, who also often come to relax there, sneaked on to the girl and sexually abused her.

Chief Inspector Odjidja said the victim woke up and screamed for help, attracting the attention of her mother who saw Mahama jumping out and taking to his heels.

He said girl's mother later reported the case to the Asawase police where it was transferred to the Women and Juvenal Unit of the police in Kumasi.

Chief Inspector Odjidja said a medical report confirmed that the girl had been defiled. He said during interrogation the accused confessed having sex with the girl. 19 May 05
