The Nkawkaw Divisional Police has arrested a 26-year-old ex-convict for posing as a staff of national security.
The ex-convict first gave his name as Fibi Abubakari Ayarega but it was later learnt that his real name is Abdul Abubakari Sadique, a trader and a former pupil teacher from Bawku in the Upper East Region.
The Nkawkaw Divisional Crime Officer, Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) Kwaku Duah told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the Police on February 2nd this year had information that the imposter was moving from districts in the Kwahu area posing as a staff of national security.
He also claimed to be the Special Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr Alex Segbefia on one occasion.
Sadique was said to have informed the DCEs that he was a brother to the Deputy Minister of Education, Mr Mahama Ayariga, and a Special Assistant to a Deputy Minister of Information, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The DCEs were Mr Samuel Asamoah, for Kwahu East; Mr Joseph Omari, Kwahu South; and Mr Alex Somuah Obeng, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwahu West.
According to the Divisional Commander, Sadique first went to Asamoah and told him that Mr Ablakwa was to visit the District but due to an equally important assignment he had sent him to monitor the DCE and the District Development Program and report back to him.
The Crime Officer said Sadique moved to the Kwahu South District and also informed Mr Omari the DCE that he had been sent from the National Security Headquarters in Accra to inspect the District Development Plan and he was given a copy of the document.
He said Sadique then proceeded to the Kwahu West Municipality and told the MCE, Mr Obeng that the government was not happy with his administration and if he was not careful, he would be removed from office.
DSP Duah said Sadique was later arrested and sent to the National Security headquarters in Accra for background check.
There it was detected that Sadique was not a staff of National Security and also not related to Mr Ayariga and had also not been sent by Mr Ablakwa.
After interrogation, Sadique was put before the Mpraeso Circuit Court on Friday, charged with the offence of posing as a public officer and attempting to defraud public officials.
He had been remanded in Police custody to reappear on March 22.
