Akyem Swedru, Sept 14, GNA - An Akyem Swedru Circuit Court on Thursday granted bail in the sum of five million cedis to Kofi Amoah, a 56-year-old farmer, for allegedly assaulting a 95-year-old man and breaking his walking stick.

Amoah, who pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault and causing unlawful damage, would reappear on September 21. Police Chief Inspector Alice Appiakorang told the court presided over by Mr Edward Kwame Bosompem Apenkwah that the old man and the accused person reside at Atiankama Nkwanta Camp in the Birim South District.

She said on August 18 the old man went to a drinking bar where he met Amoah relaxing in a chair.

Thinking that Amoah was the bar attendant he used his specially designed walking stick to tap him to wake him up. Police Chief Inspector Appiakorang said Amoah got offended, collected the stick from him and used it to assault him until it broke into pieces.

A report was made to the police who arrested Amoah. 14 Sept 06
