Asamankese, April 24, GNA - Kwabena Akrofi, a farmer, has appeared before the Asamankese Circuit Court, charged with stealing building materials worth GHC 879. He pleaded guilty with explanation and was remanded in prison custody till May 12. A bench warrant was issued for the arrest of his accomplice, Yaw Kotoko.

Police Chief Inspector Ben Nyonator, prosecuting, told the court that the complainant, Ben Amoah, a building contractor at Suhum, last February, together with a witness in the case, gave the key to an uncompleted house at Adjobo Okorase to Yaw Kotoko, now at large, to sleep in the house. He said building materials, including 26 boxes of flour tiles, one wheel barrow, six door locks, five bags of tile adhesive, two packets of nails, two wooden doors, a set of carpentry tools and 20 metres of television cables were being kept in the uncompleted house. The prosecutor said the next morning, the complainant went to the site and detected that the items had been stolen and suspected Kotoko, who was no where to be found.

On April 9, a witness in the case had information that Akrofi had offered a wheel barrow for sale at Anamase. The buyer of the item however returned it to Akrofi for his money because he suspected it was stolen. Akrofi was arrested and handed over to the police and during investigations; he led the police to retrieve some items he had pledged for money. The Prosecutor said all but the six boxes of the tiles have been recovered. In his explanation, Akrofi said the items were given to him by Kotoko, who claimed the items were a gift.
