Farmer jailed for using cutlass in a fight

The Akim Swedru Circuit Court has jailed Kwasi Apredu, a farmer, to four years imprisonment for inflicting cutlass wounds on Mr Dominic Banfo.

Apredu, 30, who refused to accept his plea in 2008, has now pleaded guilty to abetment of crime.

Police Chief Inspector Adelaide Appiah Korang told the court presided over by Mr Yaw Atta Sampong, the victim also the complainant lives at Asamankese, a village in the Akyemansa District while Apredu lives at Akim Odumase also in the same district.

She said on September 21, 2008 at about 1600 hours a quarrel ensued between Mr Banfo’s sister and the convict’s sister at Akim Odumase.

Chief Inspector Appiah Korang said Mr Banfo and the sister left for Akim Ayirebi Police Station to lodge a complaint but while on the way they were met by the convict’s relatives and another quarrel occurred.

She said Apredu armed with cutlass arrived at the scene and joined Kwaku Sakyi, his brother who was by then engaged in a fist fight with Mr Banfo.

Chief Inspector Appiah Korang said in the melee, Sakyi collected the cutlass from Apredu and wounded Mr Banfo on the head.

The victim therefore made a report with the Police and Sakyi and Apredu were arrested but when they were arraigned before the court Sakyi pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a fine of 200.00 Ghana cedis.

Apredu on his part pleaded not guilty and was remanded in prison custody.
