Akim Oda (E/R), Sept. 1, GNA - A farmer who jumped bail, got re-arrested but managed to outwit the Police and bolt away in handcuffs, has finally been arrested at Akim Manso.

Kwaku Tawiah, 27, described by the Police as a stubborn criminal, has been charged for escaping from lawful custody and stealing, but he denied having knowledge of the offence.

The accused person would appear again before the Akim Oda Magistrate's Court, presided over by Mr Albert Owusu Annor on September 9.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Akim Oda, Police Chief Inspector Adelaide Appiakorang related that Tawiah is a farmer based at Akim Manso and that he was investigated and prosecuted with other accomplices for his involvement in a series of crimes sometime in 2006.

She stated further that when Tawiah was admitted to bail, he jumped bail and a bench warrant was issued by the Akim Swedru Circuit Court, where he first appeared, for his arrest.

According to her, on April 5, 2006 at about 1500 hours, one Mr Kwaku Twum who had earlier reported Tawiah to the Police for a crime perpetrated against him, which case was still pending at the law court, spotted Tawiah with a quantity of foodstuff in a vehicle that was moving towards a Police barrier at Asanteman near Asuboa.

Chief Inspector Appiakorang stated that Mr Twum promptly alerted the Police officials on duty at the check point where he was arrested.

She said Tawiah was handcuffed by the Policemen on duty but he outwitted the Police and managed to bolt away while in the handcuffs, leaving his foodstuffs worth GH¢131 behind.

She stated that while making efforts to re-capture Tawiah, his foodstuffs were perishing, so the police sold them for GH¢131.00.

Later, on August 2, this year the accused was spotted at his hometown, Akim Manso, and was arrested by the Police.
