Fisherman bonded for attempted suicide

Cape Coast, Jan. 21, GNA - Kwaku Ambantem, fisherman, 45, from Biriwa near Cape Coast, who attempted to commit suicide because his wife had divorced him was on Monday bonded to be of good behaviour for one year by a circuit court in Cape Coast.

Ambantem, also known as Kwaku Adjei, who pleaded guilty, will go to prison for three months in default. Police Chief Inspector Augustine Amonoo, told the court presided over by Mr Asiedu-Badu that sometime in December last year, Ambantem decided to commit suicide by handing, because his wife had divorced him and left him with their children.

He said Ambantem went for a rope, hung it on the ceiling in his room and tied the other end around his neck, but the rope went loose and he fell to the ground and shouted for help.

Chief Inspector Amonoo said the shouts of Ambantem attracted his children and neighbours who rescued and sent him to the hospital. He said the matter was later reported to the police and he was arrested and during interrogation he admitted the offence. Passing sentence, the judge advised him not to give up in life, stating that when "one door gets shut, many get opened". 21 Jan. 08
