Five Sanitation offenders jailed 30 months over sanitation offences

The Abeka Sanitation Court in Accra has convicted five persons for improper disposal of refuse at unauthorized places in the city contrary to section 56 (a) and (b) of Act 851, of the Public Health Act 2012.

They are Charles Amoah 25, Vincent Onyewuen 28, Kwame Frimpong 27, Daniel Adu 32 and Felix Chukwu 30. The court presided over by Her worship Adwoa Akyaamaa Ofosu,fined all 5 persons GH600.00 cedis each for the offence but defaulted in payment hence the sentence.

According to the prosecutor, Madam Delight Dzansi, the five were arrested by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly's (AMA) sanitation task force on the 14th of October, 2018, around Tudu and Tema station all suburbs of Accra.

Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, in an interview cautioned the public to desist from such negative behaviour and urged all residents to desist from engaging the services of unauthorised waste collectors and register with accredited service providers assigned to their respective areas.

"The operation will continue and we will advise households or residents to register with the accredited solid waste company for your waste to be collected and disposed of in the right way," he said.

He indicated that the Assembly had accelerated efforts to address the sanitation situation in the city and urged all to cooperate with the Assembly and support the Clean Accra Agenda.
