The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has foiled a planned armed robbery operation, following intelligence that a gang of robbers had converged in a bush along the Antoakrom–Manso Nkwanta stretch, preparing to attack commuters.

In a Facebook post dated January 5, 2026, the police said the operation was carried out on December 31, 2025, after officers swiftly moved to the area based on the intelligence received.

Upon arrival, the police team encountered four armed suspects who opened fire and attempted to flee into the bush.

The police returned fire, during which two of the suspects sustained gunshot injuries.

The injured suspects were later identified as Usmaro Mohammed and Yaw Frimpong, also known as Nana Yaw. Two other suspects managed to escape, the statement said.

“A search conducted at the scene led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, a pump-action gun loaded with four BB cartridges, four spent cartridges, and a black bag containing 16 live cartridges. Police also impounded a Toyota VOXY vehicle, believed to have been used by the suspects in their operations”, it stated.

The injured suspects were rushed to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

According to the police, the suspects are believed to be involved in a number of robbery incidents in Manso and Obuasi, including the Mpohor gold robbery, the Nyinahini Highway robbery, and a cocoa shed robbery at Sefwi.

Preliminary investigations have further established that the suspects operated with accomplices in Mankranso, Tamale, and Brekum, whose names have been withheld. These accomplices are currently at large.

Police say investigations are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects and to establish the ownership of the impounded vehicle.
