Four NDC supporters granted bail for alleged assault

Goaso (B/A), Jan. 28, GNA - A Goaso magistrate court in Asunafo North District of Brong Ahafo, has granted GH¢300 bail each to four supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who allegedly assaulted a New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporter. Sumaila Ishak, Adams Yakubu, Shaibu Ali and Kwabena Kontor pleaded not guilty to the charge of assault and would reappear on February 9, 2009 before the court presided over by Mr Sidney Braimah. The court also issued a bench warrant for the arrest of other accomplices, Abdulai Latif Yakubu, Asoma Imoro and one Salam, who failed to appear before the court.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Charles Arthur, introduced to the court, the complainant, Mr Yaw Mensah Abrampah, Zonal Secretary of the NPP at Mehame in Asutifi district and the accused persons. He said on January 12, this year the NDC and NPP supporters in the area travelled to the high court in Sunyani to hear the Asutifi Constituency electoral dispute involving Alhaji Collins Dauda of the NDC parliamentary candidate and Mr Yiadom Boakye Boateng, NPP parliamentary candidate in the 2008 elections.

Chief Inspector Arthur said the case was adjourned and the NPP supporters boarded their vehicle and left for Mehame. He said their way they were overtaken by the NDC supporters. He said just when the NPP supporters were about entering Mehame, they saw a road block where they were surrounded by the NDC supporters. He said the NDC supporters pulled Mr Abrampah from the vehicle and physically assaulted him until he became unconscious. The prosecutor said Mr Abrampah was rescued by some good Samaritans and the matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of the accused persons.
