Four highway robbery suspects nabbed

Four suspected members of a robbery gang that attacked and robbed travelers at Kwanfinfini on the Kumasi-Bibiani highway have been arrested and detained by the Nkawie police.

One person was killed and four others hurt, when the robbers shot at a moving commercial vehicle during the attack.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Felix Fosu-Agyemang, the Nkawie Divisional Commander, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the suspects were apprehended based upon police intelligence.

He declined to give their names, except to say that they were still investigating.

The incident occurred on the September 22 and the area where it happened appear to hold enormous attraction to robbers because of its thriving gold mining industry.

ACP Fosu-Agyemang said they had taken steps to strengthen their presence and upped the day and night patrols.

Additionally, they were encouraging the formation of more Neighbourhood Watch Committees to complement the effort of the police.

He called on the people to assist them with useful leads to arrest and bring to justice criminals living in their communities.

Separately, the Ashanti Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kofi Boakye, has spoken of plans to construct barriers and tents to improve visibility on that particularly road corridor to scare away criminals.

He also advised business operators and companies to seek police escort when transporting huge sums of money or valuable goods through the remote areas.

The Atwima-Nwabiagya District Chief Executive (DCE), Nana Asare Bediako, pledged to give the police the needed support to main security.
