Accra, May 12, GNA - The Greater Accra Regional Police on Friday arrested 75 suspected criminals, including four ladies, in a swoop in some crime prone areas in the Accra Metropolis.
The swoop follows continuous complaints from the public. The suspects would be screened and those found to have committed crimes or in possession of narcotic drugs would be prosecuted.
Deputy Greater Accra Regional Police Commander Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jonathan Yakubu, told journalists that the suspected criminals were arrested in the environs of the Accra Girls' Secondary School, the Accra Railways Station, Nima and Tudu.
The suspects were between 18 years and 35 years old. Indian hemp, unregistered bicycles and other items were found on them. Some of the suspects are suspected to have committed a series of crimes while others are traffickers of narcotics and patrons of dens of narcotic sales.
ACP Yakubu explained that criminals often patronized narcotic drugs before going on their operations.
He warned the suspects that the exercise was part of the protection duties of the Police and that they would not relent until all the suspects and other undesirable elements were apprehended. ACP Yakubu said there had been car-snatching syndicates in Dansoman, Abeka-Lapaz, Kaneshie, Nima, Nima 441 and Kawukudi, who mainly robbed people of their cars.
They then use the cars in robbery expedition or sell them to unsuspecting members of the public.
ACP Yakubu appealed to the public to co-operate with the Police by volunteering information on the activities of suspected criminals and dial Areeba 191 in emergency situations. 12 May 06
