A YENDI Circuit court has sentenced a 20-year-old spinner at Makango near Salaga in the East Gonja district of the Northern region to eight years imprisonment in hard labour.

Stephen Adonu alias 'Ghana Boy' was convicted on his own plea of guilty to the charge of repeatedly defiling a 15-year-old JSS one pupil.

The Prosecution, led by Police Inspector E. Odei told the court presided over by Mr. Justice John Nasam Ajet that during the latter part of 2004, the accused met the victim (name withheld) at Makango and engaged her in sexual relationship.

He said the victim's mother, who happened to be a single parent, on learning about the relationship, warned the accused to desist from any further carnal knowledge of the girl but willfully and callously, he continued with the relationship which eventually led to the girl dropping out of school.

Alarmed by the continued defilement of her daughter and the termination of her academic ambition, the woman lodged a complaint with the chief of Makango who invited the accused and handed him to the police.

A medical examination conducted on the victim revealed that she was sexually active.

Passing sentence, Judge Ajet expressed concern over the alarming rate of the surge of defilement in society and hoped the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.
