Gold theft sends 30-year-old man to prison in Obuasi

A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for stealing refined gold worth GH?43,100 in Obuasi.

Musah Karim is reported to have sneaked into the shop of his boss, Abubakar Fuseini and made away with the gold.

Abubakar who was a victim of another robbery was shot together with his security man at his shop at Sampsonkrom in Obuasi, Ashanti.

Some unknown assailants last July shot the gold dealer twice in the leg. The security man was also shot in the head. Both were rushed to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital, but the security man was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Musah Karim, a labourer working with the victim sneaked into the workplace and stole the refined gold worth GH 43,100.

According to Obuasi Police Crime Officer, DSP Otuo Acheampong the culprit’s lifestyle changed dramatically after the incident, raising suspicion among residents.

Police in Obuasi investigated the matter, traced the gold theft to Karim, arrested and charged him for stealing before the Obuasi Circuit Court.

Musah admitted selling the stolen gold to yet to be identified persons. He used part of the money to purchase a Hyundai H100 bus and a plot of land.

In related development, the Obuasi Police have arrested two persons allegedly engaged in car theft.

DSP Mathew Asante, Obuasi Municipal Police Commander says the criminal act is rampant in the Municipality.

He has appealed to residents to volunteer information on suspects.
