A 27-year old unemployed imposter who cleverly defrauded two persons of GH¢9,000 in the name of Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr Alex Segbefia, with the promise of selling auction cars to them, has landed in the grips of National Security. He has since confessed to the crime.
In a confession statement, Adams Mohammed, said he defrauded one Madam Millicent and Mr Abass of the Guarantee Trust Bank of the amount with a false promise of helping them buy two 4 X 4 confiscated cars on auction. According to him, he collected GH¢5,000 and GH¢4,000 from Millicent and Mr Abass respectively.
The suspect's confession has exposed a recent false claim in a section of the Ghanaian media that Mr Alex Segbefia was defrauding unsuspecting persons with claims of helping them buy auction cars.
Adams Mohammed in a written statement to National Security after his recent arrest confessed that he got to know his victims through an effort by a friend, Harisu, to gain employment at the Guarantee Trust Bank.
Adams, who resides at Hatsoo-Agbogba near Accra, recounted, “During the month of May 2010, I met Harisu and his friend whose name I do not know at the office of Hon. John Jinapor at the Castle. We had discussion about an application for employment at the Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB). I then advised Harisu and his friend to send their application to the GT Bank.”
He continued by saying “When they took the application there, they collected the front desk phone line and from then we started calling the bank to find out how far they have gone with the application.”
'Clever' Adams said through their dealings with the Bank, he managed to get closer to one of the officials called Millicent Rockson and that helped him gain access to her personal cell phone number.
The alleged fraudster revealed that during his usual conversation with Millicent he told her he was working at the offices of Hon. John Jinapor and the Deputy Chief of Staff, Alex Segbefia and that actually grew the confidence level of Millicent in him (Adams) for any intended dealings.
Adams said at one time he was called by Millicent and during their conversation an issue of the sale of auction cars at the harbour came up which he confirmed and said he could help anyone who had interest in procuring one of such cars.
As a result of the heightened trust for Adams, unsuspecting Millicent contracted him to get her and her boss, Abass two of the confiscated 4x4 auction cars with a total cost of GH¢9,000.
Self confessed Adams said he did not use the money for the purpose for which it was released but rather registered a gas and oil company with the name 'Bless Oil & Gas Company.'
Trickster Adams indicated he was able to succeed in his fraudulent activities due to a complimentary card he managed to receive from Mr Segbefia. He had this to say, “I went to Mr. Alex Segbefia in his office and told him of my intention to send an application to the bank; he gave me his complimentary card to use. I then went and scanned the complimentary card at the cafe at the ministries. I also edited the complimentary card and inserted my phone number which reads 0244785092 and 0277-5519050. I then sent the scanned complimentary.”
He said after successfully duping his victims, he avoided them completely and explained that he did alterations on the original complimentary card given him by Mr Segbefia just to gain favour from Millicent.
