IGP canvasses traditional authorities' support in law, order maintenance

Nadowli, Nov. 6, GNA - Mr Patrick K Acheampong, Inspector General of Police (IGP), on Saturday appealed to traditional rulers to support the police in the maintenance of law and order so as to create a congenial atmosphere for citizens to go about their duty without fear. He said with the support of people in every community it would be possible for the crime rate in the country to be reduced to the barest minimum.

The police boss made this suggestion when he addressed chiefs in the Nadowli traditional area at Nadowli at the start of his four-day working visit to the Upper West Region.

During the visit, the IGP will inspect all district police stations in the region and interact with the personnel to learn at first hand the problems facing them on the ground and how best the police administration could address them.

Mr Acheampong will also inspect police station projects and other residential projects being undertaken by the district assemblies and communities in the Region for police personnel. He will also confer with the district chief executives and traditional leaders on the crime situation in their areas so as to workout how best to combat the situation.

Mr Acheampong assured the chiefs of the Nadowli traditional area that he would fulfil their request for more police personnel for the area by December and asked them to help provide accommodation for them. At Jirapa in the Jirapa/Lambussie District, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Justin Dakurah briefed the police chief on the crime situation in the district and identified cattle rustling and the stealing of other livestock as a major criminal activity in the area. He disclosed that as a result, many of the people had now abandoned livestock farming in view of the activities of the thieves.
