Kade Police arrest two robbery suspects

Kade (E/R), Sept. 19, GNA - The Kade Police have arrested two men in connection with an armed robbery at the Adankrono bridge toll booth on July 18. Adanse Awusi alias Onyaa and Yaw Nkrumah, both aged 20, were picked up at Afosu, near New Abirem by the police following a tip-off. Two other men of the four-member gang were arrested earlier. Police Superintendent Wisdom Akorli, Kade District Police Commander, told the Ghana News Agency that on July 18, at about 0330 hours, four men invaded the toll booth on the bridge over river Birim at Adankrono and held the three attendants there hostage. He said the men were armed with a cutlass and a pistol on board a KIA pride saloon car with registration number GW 9787 W He said they severely assaulted Thomas Aninkorah, one of the attendants at the toll booth and took away 600 Ghana cedis after locking the hostages up in the booth.

A driver arriving at the spot, however, managed to free the hostages and sent Aninkorah to Saint Dominic hospital, at Akwatia and later made a report to the police.

Mr Akorli said on July 21, police received information that one of the suspected robbers, Asuo Gyebi, had been arrested at his Nkwantanang hideout and placed in police custody. In the midst of eight other suspects in custody, an identification parade was held and Asuo Gyebi was identified by Aninkorah as one of the four who attacked them.

Gyebi then mentioned Kwaku Aboagye, Adanse Awusi alias Onyaa, and Yaw Nkrumah as his accomplices. Police proceeded to arrest the suspects but only succeeded in arresting Aboagye. Gyebi and Aboagye were arraigned before the Kade Magistrate's Court and were remanded in prison custody for three weeks. Then on September 12, police received information that Adanse Awusi and Yaw Nkrumah were at a hide-out at Afosu and proceeded there to arrest them. 19 Sept. 08
