Kasoa(C/R), July 12, GNA - The Kasoa District Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service in the Central Region arrested 132 drivers between January and June this year for various traffic offences.
The offences included over speeding, overloading, failing to renew roadworthy certificates and insurance policy, using uninsured vehicles, dangerous driving and using unregistered vehicles. The drivers, who pleaded guilty to the offences, were fined 49 million cedis by an Awutu Beraku Magistrate's court. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Michael Roland Nyaaba, Kasoa District MTTU Commander, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Kasoa that the drivers were fined between 200,000 cedis and 300,000.00 cedis.
ASP Nyaaba said 55 drivers were fined 14 million cedis in the first quarter of the year between January and March while 77 drivers were arrested and fined 35 million cedis in the second quarter of the year between April and June.
However, he said 30 drivers were acquitted and discharged by the court during the period. Mr. Nyaaba said the drivers were arrested in a special exercise to reduce accidents on the Mankessim-Winneba Junction-Kasoa road.
