A labourer who is accused of defiling a 15 year -old girl at Spintex in Accra has been put before an Accra Circuit Court charged with defilement.

Benjamin Mensah, who pleaded guilty to the charge, said he and the victim have been in a relationship for the past three months.

The Court presided over by Ms Patricia Quansah, however, convicted him on his own plea but deferred sentence to August 24.

The trial judge noted that the victim’s consent to the offence was immaterial.

Prosecuting, Detective Inspector J. B. Asante told the Court that the victim’s father is the complainant in the matter and the complainant, victim and the accused person reside in the same vicinity near the Coca Cola Company on the Spintex Road in Accra.

Inspector Asante said on April 5, at about 1600 hours the accused was playing football with his friends when he saw the victim who had been sent by her mother to go and grind pepper.

He said the accused and victim had a discussion and the victim’s mother who witnessed the interaction warned them not enter into any amorous relationship.

Inspector Asante said the victim, fearing that she would be reprimanded by her mother, decided to follow Mensah to his house.

He said at about 7:00pm the same day, the victim returned home but her father insisted that she should ‘go to where she was coming from,’ so the victim went to Mensah’s house again.

The following day, prosecution said, the victim informed Mensah he should accompany her to visit her sister at Ashiaman.

On their way, a taxi driver who knew the victim’s parents informed them of the conduct of the two.

Victim’s parent reported a case of abduction to the Police in Sakumono and later the Domestic Violence and Victim’s Support Unit medical form was issued for examination and treatment.

In his caution statement, Mensah admitted the offence.
