Madina Police arrest 22 suspected carjackers

Accra, May 5, GNA - Twenty-two suspected armed carjackers who allegedly stole five vehicles have been arrested and placed in police custody by the Accra North-East Divisional Police Command in Madina in Accra. The stolen vehicles are two Opel cars, one Toyota Land Cruiser, one Tata taxi cab and a BMW 525.

In an interview with the Madina District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Godson Amoah, he gave the names of some of the suspected robbers as George Clint, Desmond Appiah, Kwesi Acheampong, Jonathan Kujo Azaglo, Anthony Lanker and Sylvester Tamakloe. He added that the suspected armed robbers would be screened during the week and those found culpable would be prosecuted. Superintendent Amoah said on April 29, a vehicle with registration number GE 6409 Z was snatched at gun point at Ashaley Botwe, near Madina.

The complainant, whose name was not given, reported the robbery to the Madina Police and upon a tip-off, the police was informed that the stolen vehicle was at a spraying garage at Community 18 in Tema. Superintendent Amoah said the Police arrested Mr Kwesi Addo, who claimed to be the sprayer of the vehicle, in the garage. The Police noted that the addresses on the sides of the stolen vehicle had been wiped off during spraying and there was also no registration number plate.

On Saturday, May 2, 2009, the Madina Police organized a swoop with assistance of the sprayer at Tema and they were directed to the hideout of the suspected robbers where they were arrested. A search in the robbers' house revealed the number plate of the stolen vehicle - GE 6409 Z. The police subsequently retrieved the five stolen vehicles and eight different registration number plates - TG 9693 AG, RT 7516 AD, TG 6041 AG, GT 8523 X, SL 04124, DV 1860 DVLA, GT 2148 Y and TG 0760 AD.
