Mampong Police Launch anti-social vices campaign

Mampong (Ash) Aug 6.,GNA-So contemptuous are the Asante Mampong Indian hemp (wee) dealers and criminals of the police that they sell, smoke and steal respectively in broad daylight at the centre of the town, a senior police officer has said

The Mampong Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent. Augustine Gyening, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Wednesday at Mampong stressed that the Police have, as a result, launched an anti-social vices campaign, leading to the arrest of many "wee" sellers and smokers as well as armed robbers.


He said the Police on Wednesday, upon a tip off arrested, Yaw Berko, 24, an alleged mobile "wee" seller on whom was found a large quantity of "wee" concealed in a red spotted polythene bag. Berko, now in Police custody according to Mr. Gyening assisted the Police to retrieve from one Ishak, a notorious criminal and now on the run, a locally manufactured pistol with one cartridge, "monkey jack" a machete and other implements, purportedly used to break into homes. Other items collected from Ishak"s room included a colour television set, a combo sound system, DVD player, a box containing cosmetics and a large quantity of varied cell phone unit cards. The Divisional Commander added that 18 people in their mid-twenties are also facing trial at the Mampong District Magistrate Court for offences ranging from armed robbery, gambling," wee" selling and smoking.

Mr.Gyening said, "we shall smoke out all perpetrators of social vices from Mampong and its environs to allow the law-abiding people of the area to carry out their legitimate activities."
