Man arrested after attempting to sell niece for GH¢150k to acquire a Canadian Visa

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 30-year-old man at Gomoa Buduburam near Obolo Estate in the Central Region for trying to sell his niece for GH¢150,000.

According to a report by Adom FM, the suspect, identified as Nana Kofi Amofa, brought his 6-year-old niece from a village, Ayirabi Nyamibetre, under the pretense of helping her parents care for her.

However, his true intention was to sell her for GH¢150,000 to use the money for a Canadian Visa.

The report indicated that the suspect had a friend now residing in Germany who advised him to sell his family relations for GH¢150,000, which he could use to pay for the visa.

The supposed friend told the accused person that he did the same thing to acquire his visa for Germany and had a contact who could provide the Canadian Visa for GH¢150,000.

Kofi Amofa followed his friend's advice and brought his niece to Buduburam. He approached a man in Buduburam and proposed to sell his niece for GH¢150,000.

The potential buyer, realizing that the accused person was serious, reported the issue to the police station.

The Central East Regional Police Intelligence Unit followed up on the matter and planned with the potential buyer to arrest the suspect when he brought his niece for the transaction.

The news report, aired on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, included a conversation between the accused person and the potential buyer in Twi, which has been transcribed as follows:

Buyer: "What did you say was the price?"

Suspect: "I thought my master settled that with you."

Buyer: "He (the master) said when we meet we can negotiate."

Suspect: "Didn't he tell you the price?"

Buyer: "He did, but things are a bit difficult now. Yesterday, you mentioned 1.5 (GH¢150,000) but let me give you 1 (GH¢100,000)."

Suspect: "No, you want to spoil my business."

Buyer: "What if I give you 1.2 (GH¢120,000)?"

Suspect: "Please, I’m begging you."

Buyer: "You’re still insisting on the 1.5 (GH¢150,000). What language does she speak and does she attend school?"

Suspect: "She speaks Twi and she is yet to start schooling. I brought her from the village."

Buyer: "So where do you want to travel to?"

Suspect: "Oh, Canada. I’m a heavy-duty mechanic. I have been trying but nothing has worked for me."

Buyer: "I hope you have not told anybody about this transaction."

Suspect: "I’ve not. You can trust me."
