A 37-year-old man has been arrested by the Nima Divisional Police Command for allegedly beating his lover to death.

The suspect, James Asobeyiri aka Awobadi, was said to have beaten his lover, Asana Alhassan, 43, until she fell unconscious and subsequently died.

This happened when the two were returning from a drinking spot after a boozing spree.

Confirming the story, the Nima Divisional Police Commander, ACP Timothy Yoosa Bonga indicated that the incident happened on June 1, 2011 at Kanda Ruga near the NADMO headquarters in Accra.

He noted that the deceased had dated the suspect for about 10 years.

The two lovers were not living together; the deceased always visited the suspect.

“On that fateful day, the deceased prepared banku and soup from her house and carried it to her lover so that they could eat together,” ACP Yoosa Bonga said.

He added that the two lovers decided to take some “appetizer” from a nearby drinking spot before taking the banku.

While returning from the bar, a misunderstanding ensued between the two and the suspect, in the process, assaulted the victim until she fell unconscious.

He said that upon realizing that the victim was unconscious, the suspect abandoned Asana on the football park where the incident occurred and went home.

Two men who spotted the victim lying at the park the next morning around 10.00am alerted one Faisal Seidu, a brother of the victim.

When the brother came to the spot, he identified the victim as his sister, but because he was not properly dressed, he rushed home to wear some clothes and get some money.

Upon his return from the house, he realized the sister was gone and upon enquiry found that James Asobeyiri had come for Asana and so he proceeded to the lover’s house.

When he got to James Asobeyiri’s house, Faisal saw his sister lying on the veranda of the suspect and without uttering a word; he picked the victim up and rushed her to the Ridge Hospital for treatment.

The victim died around 5:50pm at the Ridge Hospital while on admission.

ACP Yoosa Bonga said the matter is still under investigation while the suspect is also being kept in custody to help the Police in their investigations.
