A man has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by the Goaso Magistrates’ Court in the Asunafo North district of the Brong Ahafo Region for severely assaulting his sister with a machete.

Accra FM’s Odehyeeba Kwasi Yeboah reported that George Apau, 30, inflicted machete wounds on the victim at Gambia No.2 after she failed to provide him money to buy food before setting off for work on the farm.

Mr Ernest Agbo, prosecuting, said on October 19, the victim had returned from the farm and was drying her produce when George approached her and demanded to know why she had failed to leave money behind when she knew she would spend so much time on the farm.

Heated exchanges arose between the two, during which George dashed to his room and brought out a cutlass to attack his sister, but a neighbour arrived at the scene and tried to intervene, only to be chased away by an enraged George who, still armed, returned to resume the interrogation of his sister.

But as tempers flared, he swung the machete at the victim’s head, drawing screams from her and attracting a crowd which rushed to her aid. The Goaso police were subsequently called in to pick up the accused.

He pleaded guilty to charges relating to causing grievous bodily harm and asked for forgiveness from the court but the presiding magistrate, His Worship Kwaku Twumasi, sentenced him to two years behind bars.
