Man remanded for allegedly selling broken tiles as mobile phone

A 26-year-old man, Mustapha Hamidu, has been remanded in police cus­tody for allegedly selling broken tiles packaged in mobile phone covers as mobile phones.

He pleaded not guilty to at­tempting to commit a crime and defrauding by false pretence when he appeared before the Accra Circuit Court, presided by Faustina Mensah.

Prosecuting, Assistant Su­perintendent of Police (ASP), S. Ahiabor, told the court that the accused had been swindling his victims by introducing to them original phones he posts for sale.

He said Hamidu, after agree­ing to specific prices through bargains ended up changing the actual phones to phone cases packaged with broken tiles.

The court heard that when the victims got home, and in their attempt to use the newly acquired phones came to the realisation that, they had been made to start to part with their monies for decorated phone cov­ers stacked with broken tiles.

ASP Ahiabor said on January 28, the police met the accused near the Achimota overpass close to the old station with an original Tecno Camon 20 cellular phone in a phone cover, and two similar phone covers all packaged with broken tiles in his usual busi­ness attempting to lure some victims.

The prosecution told the court that the accused sold the packaged tiles to his victims be­tween GH¢500 and GH¢1,000.

ASP Ahiabor said a search conducted on Hamidu revealed the fraudulent packages and he was arrested.

He said efforts were under­way to arrest Hamidu’s accom­plices who are currently at large.

The case has been adjourned to February 18, 2025.
